A Southend Borough Council spokesperson today announced the death of Ann Robertson, Conservative councillor for Milton Ward.
Cllr Robertson was aged 67. She died in hospital on Tuesday morning.
A statement from Southend Borough Council released this morning said:
“It is with great sadness and regret that Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has to announce the death of Councillor Ann Robertson.
“Cllr Robertson was taken suddenly ill at her home on Thursday afternoon.
“She was taken to Queen’s Hospital in Romford where she remained critical on a life support machine before passing away on Tuesday morning.
“Her husband Ian, also a serving Southend councillor, was at her bedside when she died.
“The couple have two grown-up children.”
Mayor Brian Smith said in a statement today: “This is utterly dreadful news.
“Ann was a popular and respected councillor who was a dedicated servant to the people of Southend.
“She was an extremely caring person whose personal touch and empathy for other people endeared her to fellow members, council staff and residents alike.
“Our thoughts are with Ann’s husband Ian and their family at this very distressing time.”
Cllr Robertson was elected to Milton Ward in June 2001. She served on the Council’s Development Control Committee, as well as a number of scrutiny committees and working parties.
Cllr Robertson was also a member of the board of Southend Children’s Partnership, as well as the Council’s Pay Champion.
